Located in Denver's Wash Park neighborhood, this whole-home renovation transforms a cold, dated residence into a warm, modern retreat inspired by the enduring relationship between mid-century modern and Japanese design. Drawing on their shared emphasis on simplicity, natural materials, craftsmanship, and connection to nature, the design creates a home that feels serene, grounded, and timeless.
At the heart of the project is a renewed private courtyard that serves as an outdoor room, bringing light and landscape into the center of the home. In a dense urban setting, the design carefully balances openness and privacy through a series of intimate outdoor spaces, framed views, and thoughtfully crafted connections to nature. Expansive windows admit natural light while selectively focusing views to create a sense of refuge, supporting wellness and a deeper connection to the rhythms of daily life.
A reimagined two-story living space introduces openness and vertical connection, allowing daylight to move throughout the home while enhancing its sense of volume. Warm wood, natural stone, and restrained detailing soften the home's previously austere character. Thoughtful craftsmanship and carefully composed materials reinforce the home's quiet character, creating spaces that feel both refined and welcoming.
